And Siri had just moved here with her boyfriend at the time and they sang some music in her dining room and I was just like, "Oh my God.
Her voice is amazing."
♪ The moon was hot and high ♪ If you don't keep an eye on what's moving ♪ ♪ Through the steam and on the rise ♪ ♪ It was a dream and it was real life ♪ ♪ There beneath a plum sky There's been people who have asked me like, "Oh, is the merch table small talk hard?"
And it's like, it's not really small talk actually.
- Uh.
- Like people come up and will tell you like about their hardest day.
- Yeah.
- Or what this song made them think of.
And generally they're pretty incredible stories that- - Yeah.
- You can like really tell how people are like speaking from a really genuine place.
- Yeah.
- Not to say it's always like that at the merch table sometimes.
- (laughing) No.
Sometimes you're like, "I'm so glad there's a table."
- Yeah.
- Between us.
- Yeah.
♪ This is the magic ♪ This is the right thing ♪ Oh I believe it ♪ Oh I believe it is - Part of us doing this is 'cause I've been wanting to go to one of your shows.
We are never in town at the same time.
- We never are.
- And then I was like, "Let's just get on screen and get to know each other."
- Yeah.
(light cymbals) - [Chastity] So you're 20 and you go to Frankfurt, Germany.
- I was doing a research grant as a student on fairytales and folklore.
- What is one that you're like, "That's a crazy one?
Or so gorgeous or?"
- Oh, there's so many.
- So dark.
- Well, I think that's actually probably like my favorite.
This is a weird favorite part to have, but in studying folklore and fairytales and you just kind of peel back the layers or you try to through time and space and how things are exchanged and they're so dark, it's awesome.
Like very like haunting.
- Yeah.
- But enchanting.
And I think the same is true of a lot of American folk music.
Just like the further into it you go, the more where you are of the context where these like stories and songs come from.
It's just, it'll like it enchant you in the darkest way.
And I find that emotion really powerful, especially if you're in a safe space to really contemplate it.
- Uh-huh.
- Yeah, I think allowing songs and stories to be scary.
We've like sanitized so much.
- Ooh.
- And we've made everything safe and I think those impulses of creating safe space are super important, but it's also really critical that we address- - Yeah.
- Scary stuff with our songs and our stories.
- Yeah.
- We make safe space for us to navigate emotions and narratives together.
And then like- - Yeah.
- I just think that's something that's really stripped away.
