Commanding officers of the government's army sought retribution against the Dakota people. Of 393 cases tried in just 6 weeks, 323 Dakota were convicted, 303 were sentenced to hang. President Lincoln intervened and reduced the number of Dakota to be hanged to 38. On December 26, 1862 the single greatest mass execution in U.S. history took place in Mankato Minnesota.
