Well, in honesty, Columbus relentlessly pursued these pandas since 1984, when China changed their policy on gifting pandas diplomatically.
In 1984, they started loaning pandas out for short term based on a fee.
So we really, really wanted them.
The first two went to the Los Angeles Zoo in 1984 for the Olympics.
But we didn't get our pandas until 1992.
It took lots of diplomatic relationship building.
We sent delegates.
We even had an animal exchange program with China for a while.
But in 1992, Jing Jing and Xin Xin made it to the Columbus Zoo.
