Johnston leaves to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology with Gilbert (MIT), gets work in New York with the renowned interior designers, Herter Brothers. In 1882, Johnston returns to St. Paul where he begins to establish himself as a residential architect for the St. Paul elite.
