Out North
Twin Cities Pride Guide

The first Twin Cities Pride Guide was made to be disposed of in case of emergency.
For early pride events, a paper flier was an important way to spread the word. But In the early and mid 70s, being out came with risks. So, the Twin Cities Gay Pride organizers created a pride guide that could be quickly disposed of in case of emergency.

(gentle music) - [Speaker 1] The second Pride has this tiny little event program.
- [Speaker 2] It's printed on a little bit heavier cardstock, and it's deliberately designed so that you could fold it up and whip it like a Frisbee.
And the organizers designed it that way because they thought that people who came to Pride might be harassed by people who hated gays or by law enforcement, and they might need to get rid of the program in a hurry.
So our very first Pride program was designed to be discarded.
- [Speaker 1] The Pride Guide began as this little Frisbee shaped program, and it evolves over time to become this giant like community yearbook.
You can really see this evolution year by year of what was going on in the community.
(soft bright music)
