The rapid growth of European cities during the Industrial Revolution put enormous strain on traditional church-side graveyards, resulting in grisly, unhealthy scenes. This prompted a revolutionary shift in cemetery design called the Rural Cemetery Movement, in which burial grounds became public gardens.
